COMPARE COMPOSTERS BEFORE BUYING

We all know researching and comparing products before buying is always a good idea. but we don't always have the time to do so. There are at least four (4) factors one should consider in selecting a composter:

Effectiveness, Durability, Price, and Origin - Made in America.

Effectiveness

You might want to read the article Finding the BEST composter. In summary, the best composter depends on people's environment, available materials, budget, and (the biggest issue) willingness to spend time doing it. In a typical urban environment where open composting is not realistic (or even allowed) and you are looking for a composting approach that is simple, clean, safe (near pest, odor, and child/pet proof), and fast. then I assume you know the Compost Tumblers offer the best solution.

Since it is difficult to impossible to get effective compost heating in batches under 7 cu ft, we know that should be the minimum size of your composter. Among compost tumblers, those that have central aeration systems are in fact going to be the more effective. We invented the central aeration system used in the Urban Compost Tumblers, patented it in 2000 and was the first manufacture to offer it to the public in a compost tumbler. Others have attempted to add some type of aeration but no one else has done it more effectively.

Durability

Remember a composter must sit outside in the sun and rain, hot and cold, year round and hold up. Units with hinged doors, gears, metal parts, cranks and whatever are going to have problems. Wet compost can get very heavy so the barrel/drum and the stand/frame they sit on must be able to hold a couple hundred pounds or more without bending. The warranty offered by a manufacture can be an indicator on durability.

Here is an over simplified test. but it works. How much does the composter weigh when empty? This will tell you the actual amount of material they used to construct it. For example, there are many inexpensive compost tumblers that weight 20-30 lbs. In contrast, the Urban Compost Tumbler weights over 70 lbs and comes with a 10-year warranty. What does that tell you about its construction and durability?

Price

There are a large number of compost tumblers on the market ranging in cost from $99 to almost $1,000. A couple factors can cut this range down. I don't believe there are any compost tumblers for under $100 that are at least 7 cu ft in size (minimum to start heating compost effectively) and very few people are willing to spend over $500 for a composter. So, the typical price range for a compost tumbler that can start to do an effective job of composting is (after shipping and related costs) going to be in the $150 to $500 price range.

However, the true price or value of a composter tumbler is actually a combination of price, durability and effectiveness. You can feel like you're saving by buying a cheaper composter but if it is less effective and does not hold up over time, you probably have not saved at all.

Made in America

This is the simplest of all tests. Is it important to you to keep jobs in America? If so, whenever possible buy American made products.

Exaco Trading ECO-2000 2.4 Gallon Kitchen Compost Waste Collector

The cheap Exaco Trading ECO-2000 kitchen compost bucket is definitely a bargain. The low price has meant that customers have given it really rather glowing reviews, but does it live up to the realities?

The Exaco Trading ECO 200 price means that this is the most popular kitchen compost bucket  available so let’s investigate.

Features Of The Exaco Trading ECO-2000 Compost Bucket

The reality is that compost buckets are not complicated items. At their heart they are simply to collect kitchen scraps in a convenient way so that we can then save having to go to the compost heap quite as often.

With that in mind let’s take a look at some of the features:

Features

I know, brief and to the point! There really is not too much to talk about as far as features are concerned. This is a green plastic bucket with a flip up lid and a handle for putting in our kitchen scraps. What we really need to know is if it will stand the test of time.

Durability Of The Exaco Trading Compost Pail

Many owners have had theirs for over a year with no problems. It is sturdy plastic that is easy to clean and it is going to be a part of the kitchen for years to come. For the very low price Exaco Trading compost pail we get a surprisingly sturdy design.

Odors

This is always an issue with compost buckets. The model comes with a replaceable carbon filter and it does a great job of keeping odors at bay. It ensures that it can be kept in the kitchen until full.

Capacity

For a normal family it can actually hold 5 -7 days worth of kitchen scraps unless you are very prolific with your waste. It certainly allows us to cut down on trips to the compost heap.

Lid

The tight fitting lid ensures that we won’t be seeing fruit flies and the like hovering around, or worse yet coming out when the lid is open. This is important from both a hygiene and a sanity point of view. I don’t know about you but they drive me mad and it is often an issue when I get to my outdoor compost heap.

Exaco Trading ECO-2000 Compost Bucket Reviews

Customer reviews are very positive on Amazon, the cheapest place to buy it. Nearly everyone agrees that for the money it is about the best buy compost bucket.

Simple, yet effective. If you have room then it can be stored in the cupboard under the sink. We have to be honest and admit it is not the most inspiring of designs, but it gets the job done and very effectively. See the compost buckets guide  for other options and for my top pick, it may be helpful before you make a final buying decision

Earth Machine Compost Bin Review

composter tumbler test and price.[read]

The Earth Machine compost bin is simple in design, but it sure does work. This article will provide you with a complete review of this compost bin, including some very useful tips and advice.

Whether you've been using an Earth Machine for years, or it's a new addition to your family, you're going to benefit from reading this review.

To start, we thought it would be helpful to evaluate the Earth Machine using the 10 criteria we use to assess all compost bins. These 10 criteria can be found on our best compost bin page. So, let's begin.

10 Point Compost Bin Evaluation

1. Volume - FAIL

Ideally, a compost bin can handle a minimum of 27 cubic feet (or 1 cubic yard) of compost ingredients. The Earth Machine compost bin falls short in this area; only being able to handle a maximum of 10.5 cubic feet of waste. Therefore, the ingredients inside the Earth Machine will take longer to break down than those put into a larger compost pile, since piles smaller than 27 cubic feet lack adequate volume to generate high temperatures.

Note - High temperatures are not a necessary requirement for composting to occur; however, they do reduce the time it takes to make quality compost.

2. Rodent-Proof - PASS

The Earth Machine is almost 100% rodent proof. It comes with a very tight-fitting lid and plastic bolts to secure it to the ground.

We have heard the odd story of rodents digging underneath the Earth Machine to access it's contents, but we've never experienced this ourselves. If this does occur, we recommend placing a wire mesh (e.g. chicken wire) underneath your compost bin before setting it in place. The manufacturer's of the bin also sell a base which is intended for this very purpose.

3. Affordable - PASS

You can't beat FREE. We are fortunate enough that our municipality has a relationship with the producers of the Earth Machine (Norseman Environmental), so we received our bins at no cost. Well, we can't say that, we're sure the cost of the bins is buried somewhere in our taxes.

That being said, there are reports that the Earth Machine compost bin can range in cost from $30-$100 plus shipping. If you visit the official Earth Machine website. you'll see that they also offer various truckload sales throughout the year.

Overall, if you're going to have to pay more than $40 for your Earth Machine, save your money and use it to build your own compost bin.

4. Appearance - PASS

We find the appearance of the Earth Machine compost bin to be quite aesthetically-pleasing. It's black color, and small nature, allow it to blend into most setting in your yard.

5. Easy to Add New Ingredients - PASS

With it's large opening in the top, we have never had a problem adding new ingredients to our Earth Machines. Although, we tend to stick to the manufacturer's guidelines and only add kitchen scraps. We tend to limit the amount of yard waste we add to these bins (we have larger piles for these materials).

6. Ease of Turning - FAIL

This is probably one of the biggest drawbacks of the Earth Machine compost bin. It is difficult to turn/flip it's contents. The opening in the top is large enough to easily add new materials, but a real pain in the butt to try and access with a compost fork; however, we still manage to do it. We assume that this lack of maneuverability is why the manufacturer is now selling hand-held compost turners with their units.

There are other methods to turning this bin's contents, such as the lift and flip technique. This technique involves lifting the entire Earth Machine off of it's contents, and re-situating it nearby. Then you can shovel the contents of the pile back into the newly positioned bin, flipping them while you go. Sound like a lot of work? We think so.

Caution - If you're going to try turning your Earth Machine compost with a compost fork, please be careful of the lips around the bin's top rim. You can see these in the photos below. We've scraped our hands on these lips quite a few times, and it's quite painful.

7. Made of Recyclable Materials - PASS

The Earth Machine compost bin is made with a minimum 50% post-consumer recycled materials.

Ideally, the Earth Machine would be made of 100% post-consume recycled materials; however, in order for the product to be somewhat rigid, we think it needs some new materials. If we're wrong in our thinking, please send us your comments or write to us using the form below.

8. Expandable - PASS

Popular Fertilizer & Compost videos

Learn how to compost manure in only thirty days, completely ready for fertilizer in the garden, weed free, odor free and fully bioavailable.

Compost horse manure.

One of the great things about the Earth Machine compost bin is that it's expandable. That is, if you need more composting bin (i.e. more room for your composting materials), just add one or two more bins to your system. It's that easy.

Aside from the difficulty in turning the bin's contents, the Earth Machine does come with adequate ventilation. As you can see by the pictures below, there is ventilation in near the lid of the bin as well as along the sides.

10. Calls for Use - PASS

The final criteria we use to judge a compost bin is whether or not it calls you to use it. We believe this criteria hinges on the compost bin's location. Is the bin nice enough that it be situated near your living quarters? If so, you're much more likely to use it.

As for the Earth Machine compost bin, we believe it passes this test with flying colors. Due to it's pleasing aesthetics and compact design, it fits quite nicely near any house or garden shed.

Here is a great story about one of our Tribe members and how she turned two Earth Machines into super-productive worm composting bins .

Our Conclusion

Overall, the Earth Machine satisfies 8 of our 10 criteria used to evaluate compost bins. That's pretty darn good. So whether you're an avid composter, or just starting out, we believe this compost bin will help meet your composting needs.

Additional Earth Machine Benefits

The following is a list of additional benefits provided by the Earth Machine that weren't listed in the 10-points above.

  • It's collapsible, so it fits into a small car (we used our little Honda Civic).

  • It's black color attracts sunlight, adding to the heating of the bin's contents.

  • It comes with a "Home Composting Handbook", which explains the basics of composting (in case you aren't near an internet connection to access our site).

  • It does such a great job of keeping out water, that you'll want to make sure you monitor the moisture levels of your composting ingredients (use the hand-squeeze test ).

  • It WORKS! (see image on right)

  • The Earth Machine compost bin main website has some simple composting for kids exercises. You've gotta start those compost junkies at a young age!

Tips For Using Your Earth Machine

The following is a list of helpful tips that will make your Earth Machine composting experience a lot more enjoyable and efficient.

    • Avoid putting sticks and branches into your Earth Machine, unless they are first put through a compost grinder, or you're willing to wait several years for them to decompose.
      composter tumbler test and price.[read]

  • As you build your layers within your Earth Machine, be sure to add some garden soil or finished compost. Try to order it so that you add a layer of greens, followed by browns, and then a layer of garden soil, then repeat. The soil and compost will help minimize odors as well as inoculate your bin with beneficial microbes. If you'd like to get even more sophisticated, try adding half a cup of Recharge (our new compost remineralizer)

  • If you can afford them, buy two or three Earth Machine compost bins and treat them as you would a three-bin composter system. For more information on this type of system, please see our Best Compost Bin page.

  • When your compost is finished, don't try to use the tiny little door on the Earth Machine to remove it; instead, unscrew the base and lift the entire unit off of your finished pile. Now your pile is accessible from all sides and you can sift your compost to your heart's delight.

Extend your composting season, especially if you live in a cooler climate, with the Jora 33 Gallon 125 Compost Tumbler. Composting generates heat and the different micro-organisms start working at different temperatures. The insulated design allows the temperature to rise higher than 160 degrees F, resulting in the quickest, most efficient composting of your organic kitchen waste. These warmer temperatures create a composting process so fast that fresh waste starts to break down before it even has a chance to rot or attract rodents or flies. Thanks to this insulate design, the Jora will keep working through winter, long after many composters are in hibernation.

The Jora is divided into two compartments. Fill one while the compost in the other side matures. Once the side you're filling is at capacity, you can empty the mature compost from the other side, and begin again. It's also rodent proof. The Jora sits off the ground so rodents and other pests simply can't gain access to what's inside. You can even mount it to the wall - mount included, and you just need to supply the screws.

Be sure to rotate your Jora on a regular basis. Regular mixing is necessary for successful composting. Fresh waste is brought into direct contact with decaying waste, increasing the efficiency of the composting process. Also, air gets into the mixture, providing the much-needed oxygen that's vital to the process.

196 of 200 people found the following review helpful

Color Name: Black Size Name: 80 gallon

The best compost I never made was the large pile of composted leaves left behind by a previous owner of a house previously owned. Ever since inheriting that magical pile or organic gold, I've been on a futile quest to create my own compost. Unfortunately I'm no alchemist and too lazy to do a good turn of my compost pile.

The Lifetime Compost Tumbler, packaged in an awfully big box, seemed to be the ticket for easy compost. Directions state "two adults required to complete assembly." With some stress I assembled the tumbler by myself and regretted the absense of a second adult assembler several times during the process. On one step I used a pair of long handled pliers to hold nuts on the inside while I screwed on bolts from the outside. It was a stretch, but I mangaged. You'll need an electric drill to make your own predrilled holes, phillips screwdriver, 3/4" wrench and socket wrench with 3/4" and 1/2" sockets.

The finished unit feels quite sturdy and looks like a big space ship has landed in the backyard. When empty the composter is easy to turn. When full, it takes some exertion. For some reason there's a locking pin assembly on the outside of the unit that locks the tumbler in place and prevents turning. I learned from trial and error to turn the barrel by rolling it towards myself. Turning it the other way keeps engaging the locking pin.

I placed the unit in an inconspicuous spot behind the screened porch. Since one should keep the compost ingredients moist, I wish I had placed it closer to the garden hose. It's not too much work, though, to fill up a watering can and carry it to the composter.

A How To "Booklet" comes in the box with the composter. I learned about blending browns and greens and adding moisture and nitrogen. Read more ›

Lifetime Composter Reviews – Lifetime Compost Tumbler

Time for another Composter Review.  It seems we keep finding gems amongst the growing number of large compost tumblers to talk about.  They’re not for everyone, but they are a breakthrough for those whose aversion to manually turning a compost heap has previously put them off making great garden compost for themselves.  Today its the turn of the Lifetime Composter. or the Lifetime 80 gallon compost tumbler if you would like to be specific. Buy the Lifetime composter for the best price online thanks to an amazing supplier.

This is a rather cheap compost tumbler unlike many of the other newer products available.  It is a little more than our favorites (the Achla composter and the Earthcare compost tumbler ), but the Lifetime compost tumbler is cheap enough to make it worthy of consideration. Check out the latest amazon price via the link above.

    Lifetime 80 Gallon Compost Tumbler

Like the Achla, this compost tumbler spins at its widest point, meaning that in theory it should be a lot easier to turn than some of the upright models.  Of course this does mean it takes up a little more floor space but frankly we like an easy life so this ticks box number one!  As with all tumbling bins though it does of course get less easy to turn as it fills, but still for most customers it works out to be far easier than manually turning a heap with a pitch-fork.  Plus of course you get a faster digesting time to get the compost ready to use, which is one of the primary advantages of these spinning composters.

The Lifetime composting tumbler will has a ten cubic feet (or approximately 80 gallon) capacity which makes it an ideal size for a medium to large family.  Of course there will come a time when it is full and busy digesting all your kitchen scraps and garden waste, so any size family will really need two bins eventually.

But for a primary spinning model this one is pretty good.  Inside is a bar that will help aerate all the waste inside and add some core strength to the whole thing.  They key thing that makes this bin a little different is the massive hatch to give you easy access to the good stuff inside.

Why Buy The Lifetime Compost Tumbler

what is compost tumbler.[read]The drum itself is made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Plastic, which is durable and good at resisting weather and UV light.  The black color means the whole thing absorbs heat so helping initiate the composting process.  It is double walled which helps insulate the whole thing.  In the winter as temperatures outside dip this can be a real help in keeping the matter inside hot enough to break down really quickly.  We would have liked the plastic to be from recycled sources as with other bins but we trust this will change in the future.

The frame is galvanised powder coated steel, strong enough to cope with the large drum on top.  It isn’t too high either which is help when emptying the contents once decomposed.

There is a 5 year limited factory warranty with the compost tumbler, which is about average for these type of metal framed/plastic drummed models, and you can get free shipping too.

On the whole its a good product, will create compost readily and is straightforward to use, well insulated and offers great access to the end product.  One thing to mention though is that this may not be the easiest composter to put together.  Now there aren’t that many bits to it, but the size and mixture of plastic and metal mean there are quite a few fixings that really need two pairs of hands, so put this one together when you have company is our suggestion! But we do love the Lifetime composter for its simplicity and the extra large access hatch.
